Pound Holds Firm Against Yen as UK Monetary Policy Expectations Shift

      Warren Takunda

      Central Bank

      Summary:

GBP/JPY approaches 212.00 as UK fiscal concerns ease and expectations of a BoE rate hike support Sterling. Potential Japanese FX intervention remains the main obstacle to a sustained breakout.

GBP/JPY is trading close to a two-month high during Tuesday’s European session, with the cross approaching the psychologically important 212.00 level. Sterling continues to outperform the Japanese Yen as easing concerns over the UK’s fiscal position and expectations of another Bank of England rate increase provide support. However, the prospect of intervention by Japanese authorities is keeping buyers cautious, making a sustained break above 212.00 an important test for the current bullish momentum.
The Pound has benefited from a relatively calm market reaction to the latest UK budget updates, which have eased some of the concerns surrounding government finances and the bond market. Investors have also maintained strong expectations that the BoE will raise interest rates on Thursday. This combination has helped Sterling retain its strength, particularly against the Yen, where uncertainty over the timing of the next Bank of Japan tightening move continues to weigh on the currency.
DBS strategists argue that the October 28 Autumn Budget did little to disrupt gilt market conditions or expectations for a November 5 rate increase. They anticipate that the Monetary Policy Committee could deliver a 7-2 vote in favour of a hike, compared with the 6-3 split that supported the September pause. Such a shift would suggest that more policymakers are becoming concerned about persistent inflation pressures, potentially reinforcing Sterling’s appeal.
The Yen, meanwhile, remains vulnerable to the wide interest rate differential between Japan and the UK. With the BoJ's next move still uncertain, the carry-trade appeal of holding Sterling against the lower-yielding Japanese currency remains intact. Nevertheless, the risk of official intervention is becoming increasingly relevant as the pair approaches elevated levels.
Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama reiterated that the joint foreign exchange statement with the United States remains in force, adding that authorities are prepared to respond to excessive or disorderly weakness in the Yen. This warning could discourage aggressive selling of the Japanese currency and introduce sudden volatility if officials decide that market conditions warrant action.
The immediate focus remains on Thursday’s BoE decision. While expectations of a rate increase are already providing support to Sterling, the voting split and policymakers’ guidance will be important in determining whether the Pound can extend its advance. A more hawkish outcome could strengthen the case for further GBP/JPY gains, while a less decisive message may encourage profit-taking after the recent rally.

Technical AnalysisPound Holds Firm Against Yen as UK Monetary Policy Expectations Shift_1

GBP/JPY maintains a bullish structure on the H4 chart, with price recovering strongly from the October lows and establishing a sequence of higher highs and higher lows. The recent advance has pushed the pair back above the 210.40 resistance area, which has now become an important support zone. This shift suggests buyers remain in control, with momentum favouring further upside as long as the pair holds above the reclaimed level.
Price is currently trading around 212.12, testing the immediate resistance region between 211.80 and 212.20. This is a crucial area because it previously attracted selling pressure. A sustained H4 close above 212.20 would strengthen the bullish breakout scenario and potentially open the way toward 213.50 before the next major resistance around 214.70–214.90. The projected price action also suggests a possible short-term retest of the breakout zone before another upward move.
The main risk to this setup is a rejection around 212.20 followed by a move back below 211.80. Such a development could trigger a deeper correction toward 210.40, where buyers would need to defend the previous breakout structure. However, the broader recovery remains constructive, and I favour buying opportunities on a controlled pullback rather than chasing an extended bullish candle.
