The New Zealand Dollar is extending its recovery against the US Dollar, with NZD/USD approaching 0.5650 during Friday’s European session. The rebound comes as investors increasingly view the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s latest decision to leave interest rates unchanged as a temporary pause rather than a shift away from monetary tightening. Although the central bank’s decision initially pressured the Kiwi, expectations of further rate increases are helping limit selling pressure.
The RBNZ surprised markets on Wednesday by keeping its Official Cash Rate at 2.75%, despite expectations for a 25-basis-point increase to 3%. However, the decision did not signal unanimous support for maintaining the current policy stance. OCBC analysts noted that Chief Economist Paul Conway favored a rate increase, while Governor Anna Breman supported the majority decision to hold rates and allow previous increases in July and September more time to influence domestic demand.
OCBC views the decision as a pause rather than a dovish policy reversal, highlighting the RBNZ’s indication that tighter monetary conditions may still be necessary. The bank continues to anticipate two additional rate increases, one in December and another during the first quarter of 2027. This outlook could provide a degree of support for the New Zealand Dollar, particularly around the 0.5600 level, which OCBC identifies as an important near-term threshold for NZD/USD.
The US Dollar, meanwhile, is facing some pressure as investors reassess risk sentiment ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. ING analysts point to renewed weakness in technology stocks, which has encouraged demand for US Treasuries and weighed on the Greenback as shorter-dated yields moved lower. Although the movements across equity and currency markets remain relatively contained, changing sentiment around artificial intelligence-related investments continues to create uncertainty for the Dollar.
Nevertheless, the US economic backdrop remains supportive of the currency. Recent data showed third-quarter growth slightly above expectations at 3.4%, while core PCE inflation increased by 0.3% month-on-month in September. These figures reinforce concerns about persistent inflation and keep the Federal Reserve under pressure to maintain a restrictive policy stance. ING therefore cautions against assuming that the latest Dollar weakness signals a lasting change in its broader outlook.
Political uncertainty could also influence trading over the coming sessions. ING highlights the possibility that investors may reduce some of their long Dollar positions ahead of the US midterm elections, particularly as prediction markets assign a 68% probability to a Democratic sweep. Potential concerns surrounding government shutdown risks, debt-ceiling negotiations and technology-sector sentiment could add to the pressure on the Greenback.
For NZD/USD, the combination of expectations for further RBNZ tightening and near-term Dollar weakness offers room for additional recovery. However, stronger US economic data and the prospect of continued Fed vigilance remain obstacles to a sustained Kiwi advance. The 0.5600 area will remain important for assessing downside resilience, while the pair’s ability to hold above it could help maintain the current recovery momentum.
Technical Analysis
NZD/USD is trading near 0.5643 after a violent midweek flush from the 0.5712 high to 0.5568, a drop of about 145 pips, was fully absorbed at the 0.5567-0.5579 demand zone. The recovery has carried the pair back above the 0.5625-0.5638 zone, roughly a 50% retracement of the sell-off. A spike that deep, reversed within two sessions, looks like a sweep of the range floor, and the higher low at 0.5609 suggests buyers are defending dips. The broader picture is still a downtrend from the August highs near 0.5960, so confirmation is needed.
The immediate focus is on the 0.5651 swing high and the 61.8% retracement near 0.5657. A decisive H4 close above 0.5657 could strengthen bullish momentum and open the door toward 0.5671, the top of the flush candle, followed by the 0.5705-0.5712 double-top area. A break above 0.5712 would target the 0.5750 September swing high. If buyers maintain control, the pair could extend toward the 0.5850-0.5862 supply zone, in line with your projected path.
However, the pair remains vulnerable to renewed selling if the recovery stalls. A rejection near 0.5657 could trigger a pullback toward the 0.5625-0.5638 zone, which should now act as support. A close below 0.5625 would expose the 0.5609 higher low. The critical downside level remains 0.5600, and a break below it would put the 0.5567-0.5579 zone and the 0.5568 spike low back in play.
Overall, NZD/USD has a cautiously bullish short-term outlook, with a sustained break above 0.5712 needed to confirm further upside toward 0.5750 and then 0.5850. Until that breakout occurs, the advance could still represent a corrective rebound within the broader downtrend.
