The British Pound extended its advance against the US Dollar on Friday, with GBP/USD approaching 1.3420 and heading towards a third consecutive week of gains. Sterling has found support following this week’s UK budget announcement, which appears to have eased concerns over the country’s public finances and helped restore some confidence in the bond market. The latest move also comes ahead of an important Bank of England policy decision next week, with investors increasingly positioning for another interest rate increase.
UK housing data offered an additional, albeit modest, source of support. Nationwide reported that house prices were unchanged in October, outperforming expectations for a 0.2% decline and improving on September’s 0.3% contraction. While the figures do not point to particularly strong housing momentum, the better-than-expected result adds to the relatively constructive domestic backdrop supporting Sterling.
The budget has been particularly important for market sentiment. Concerns had been building around elevated public debt and pressure in the UK bond market, leaving investors cautious ahead of Chancellor John Healey’s announcement. However, the budget’s broadly neutral reception appears to have reduced immediate fiscal uncertainty. The yield on the UK 10-year Gilt has fallen by nearly 10 basis points since Wednesday, suggesting that investors have responded with some relief. That decline in borrowing costs has helped the Pound extend its recovery.
Attention is now shifting towards the Bank of England, where markets are pricing in an almost fully expected 25-basis-point rate increase next week. Recent economic conditions, with growth continuing and inflation remaining above the central bank’s target, have strengthened expectations for further tightening. The decision and accompanying guidance will therefore be important in determining whether Sterling can maintain its recent momentum.
The Dollar, meanwhile, faces a separate source of uncertainty ahead of the US midterm elections. Analysts at ING point to prediction-market pricing that places the probability of a Democratic sweep at around 68%, arguing that such an outcome could create additional concerns around government funding negotiations, debt-ceiling discussions and sentiment towards technology-related investments. They consequently advise caution towards chasing further Dollar strength in the coming days.
For GBP/USD, the combination of easing UK fiscal concerns and expectations of a BoE rate increase has provided a favourable backdrop. However, the next leg higher will likely depend on whether the central bank delivers the anticipated hike and whether political developments in the United States generate further pressure on the Greenback. Sterling’s recent advance is encouraging, but the upcoming policy decision remains a key test for the rally.
Technical Analysis
GBP/USD is trading near 1.3429, extending a sharp rebound that has carried the pair through the 1.3404-1.3417 supply zone and above the 1.3418 double-top highs, its highest level since the mid-September breakdown. The pair has rallied about 150 pips from the 1.3277 pullback low, which held at the 1.3282-1.3293 zone, the former range ceiling, now confirmed as support. That follows the mid-October spike low near 1.3145, and the sequence of higher lows (1.3145, 1.3277) plus the break of the prior swing high suggests the short-term trend has turned up. The broader structure still sits below the September supply, so a hold above the broken zone is needed.
The immediate focus is on the 1.3436 session high and the 1.3475-1.3480 area, the early-September low. A decisive H4 close above 1.3436 could strengthen bullish momentum and open the door toward 1.3475-1.3480, followed by 1.3560, the September swing high. If buyers maintain control, the pair could extend toward the 1.3641-1.3654 supply zone, where the August highs formed, in line with your projected path.
However, the pair remains vulnerable to a pullback after such a vertical advance. A rejection near 1.3436-1.3480 could send price back to retest the 1.3404-1.3417 zone, which should now act as support. A close below 1.3375, the base of the breakout candle, would weaken the move, and a break of the 1.3277 higher low would reopen the downside toward the 1.3190-1.3178 zone.
Overall, GBP/USD has a cautiously bullish short-term outlook, with a sustained break above 1.3436 needed to confirm further upside toward 1.3475-1.3480 and then 1.3560. Until that breakout occurs, the advance could still represent a counter-trend rebound within the broader downtrend.
