Firming US Dollar Pressures Gold Amid Choppy Trading

      Eva Chen

      Summary:

The gold market is currently caught in a tug-of-war between macroeconomic headwinds (a strong US dollar and high interest rates) and geopolitical tailwinds (safe-haven demand and central bank gold purchases).

      Fundamental

Following today's open, XAU/USD surged to a high of $4190.03/oz before encountering resistance, and is currently trading within the $4130–$4140 range. After briefly breaching the $4150 handle, gold faced strong selling pressure—primarily dragged down by a dual blow from a strengthening US dollar and rising US Treasury yields—as the tug-of-war between bulls and bears reached a fever pitch.
On the FX front, a firming US Dollar Index has resumed its upward trajectory, serving as the primary headwind for gold. Although last week's higher-than-expected US PPI report briefly dampened market bets on an October Fed rate hike, the greenback regained its footing at the start of the week as a slate of key economic releases approached. Upcoming data releases during the session—including ADP employment figures, housing starts, and building permits—could reinforce the "higher-for-longer" interest rate narrative if they come in strong, thereby pushing US Treasury yields higher. Because gold is a non-yielding asset, rising Treasury yields directly elevate the opportunity cost of holding bullion, dimming its appeal. Furthermore, remarks from White House National Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett stating that "more work is needed" on inflation have injected added uncertainty into the monetary policy path, cementing the dollar's strong footing.
Conversely, the impasse in Iranian nuclear negotiations and shipping risks in the Strait of Hormuz have kept safe-haven sentiment alive, limiting downside potential for gold. Overall, the gold market is embroiled in a tug-of-war between macroeconomic headwinds (a strong dollar and high rates) and geopolitical tailwinds (safe-haven flows and central bank accumulation).

      Technical Analysis

On the technical front, XAU/USD is currently testing bottom support inside a lower pink consolidation range. Following a rapid prior decline, price action continues to consolidate horizontally inside the pink box (4110.00–4210.00 area) to build a base, while remaining capped by the dual-tunnel system above.
Key downside support lies at the lower bound of the pink box and the zero line on the horizontal baseline (4078.63–4110.00 zone). A breakdown below this defense line would break the current low-level balance and trigger a deeper sell-off toward the 4040.74 region. Key upside resistance rests at the upper boundary of the pink box, coinciding with the inner fast tunnel (EMA 144/169, around 4204–4215). Further strong resistance is situated at the outer slow tunnel (EMA 288/338, around 4248–4259) and the 0.236 Fibonacci retracement level (4419.59). XAU/USD is presently hovering near the lower support band of the pink range, though whether it can successfully base and mount a sustained rebound from this zone warrants further observation.
Regarding indicators, within the dual-tunnel system, the inner fast tunnel formed by EMA 144 (4204.580) and EMA 169 (4215.669) trades below the outer slow tunnel formed by EMA 288 (4248.927) and EMA 338 (4259.348). Both tunnels display a smooth downward slope, confirming that short-to-medium-term bears retain firm control. However, current spot prices (4132.65) sit near the lower support zone of the pink box (4110–4130). Previous spikes below the lower edge were swiftly met with long lower shadows and rapid recoveries, demonstrating solid buying support at lower levels. Given that prices have built momentum near the base of the range for an extended period and remain stretched away from the overhead tunnel resistance, the probability is high that XAU/USD will stabilize in the 4110.00–4130.00 region to initiate an oversold technical bounce toward the top of the box and the inner fast tunnel (near 4204.00).
